We believe that our story is our resume.
The trials and tribulations of our history are the vehicle by which we’ve gone to places that we never dreamed we could go, or imagined we WOULD go.
They've led us on a most unexpected journey through the worlds of organic gardening, and homeopathic remedies, where we've amassed a great deal of knowledge and a vast network of wonderful, like minded people.
Together we've created an amazing system of products that we're incredibly proud of. And here's why. . .
The story of Homgarten begins in New York with a professional court stenographer named Regina and a court officer named Craig.
The two fell in love and in 2002 got married. Sadly, by 2004 their pursuit of the American dream began crack when Regina developed symptoms of what was later diagnosed as Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
Regina continued to develop symptoms while the severity of others grew.
The intensified pain and spasms in her arms and legs made everyday tasks extremely challenging, inhibiting her ability to perform the tasks of her job.
As the spasticity and weakness in her legs increased, she gradually lost the ability to walk without a cane, and then a walker, until eventually every step was exhausting.
She began the “good day, bad day” cycle that is synonymous with MS, causing her to miss work more and more often until she could no longer stay on her feet long enough to walk from the car to the railroad platform. At this point, she was forced to give up her twenty-two-year career that she loved so much, and their dream was shattered.
All the while, she went through the arduous task of finding quality doctors to treat her and being the subject of numerous treatment attempts and clinical studies.
Medicine to stop the progression, medicine to control the symptoms, medicine to combat the side effects of the other medicines, and so on and so on.
Sadly, very few medicines had any more than mediocre effects on her symptoms, more often creating unhealthy and sometimes dangerous conditions such as hallucinating or fainting as a result of a sudden loss of blood pressure which resulted in physical injury more than once.
She did everything right.
She ate healthy and exercised.
She followed her doctor’s recommendations.
She tried every option that was presented to her.
She even went as far as volunteering for an experimental treatment that went on to be a potentially deadly risk for people with a particular genetic marker which she has.
She had a pump installed inside of her abdomen to pump medicine directly into her spinal column to easy the spasticity in her legs which works, but also makes them weaker. And it has no effect on the acute spasms which are sometimes severe enough to injure to her spine.
In early 2015 she was ready to throw in the towel after hearing her doctor say “this is the last thing I have for you to try. If this doesn’t work, I’m not sure what we can do about your spasms”. Only to be disappointed one last time.
This was a turning point. Craig began to research alternative treatments, hyper focused on the spasms.
Little by little, she transitioned away from the toxic and ineffective pharmaceuticals she'd been given for years and into an organic, paleolithic lifestyle.
Soon discovering that TRULY organic food is much harder and more expensive to find than most people think. Especially during winter on the east coast.
Even more difficult was the search for herbal remedies that were not only grown in a clean, organic way, but also the right ones for the job. Many of which are very hard to find and not always genetically correct.
So the next step was learning how to grow it all themselves, all year round.
First constructing a grow room inside their home, while trying to develop a grow system that would be automated and accessible enough for Regina to use on her own. Additionally, they still hadn’t found a safe and effective treatment for the brutal spasms.
Throughout their search for a solution, they found story after story of people successfully treating such spasms with one particular herbal remedy that came with a long standing negative stigma, and several other challenges.
They were hesitant to say the least, but during a night of spasms so bad that Regina contemplated swallowing all of her pills at the same time in to escape the discomfort once and for all, they decided it was time to try.
Much to their surprise, after taking only a tiny bit, her spasms stopped and she was, for the first time in three years, able to sleep through the night without any spasms.
It was eye opening and humbling.
However, they soon found out how challenging it can be to find the specific types that actually worked for her. It was even more challenging to be assured of its organic and chemical free nature.
So from that moment on, Craig was on a mission to learn as much as possible about the implications, risks and alternatives of this miraculous remedy. Through schooling, extensive research and industry networking, Craig amassed a great deal of knowledge and a strong network of industry professionals with which he made his place in the community by putting that knowledge and passion for helping people into Altermed Consultants inc., A New York based industry think tank and treatment advisory panel for patients, providers and companies intending to enter the space.
Altermed offered training and education for law makers, and people outside of the community as well, which aided their efforts to get this wonderful remedy added to the list of legally allowable homeopathic remedies.
As a result, Craig co-authored the Compassionate Care Act in New York and his personal testimony has been credited for changing the minds of those state representatives most opposed to it, ultimately convincing them to pass the bill in 2014.
Unfortunately, it remained difficult for Regina to find the proper types for her symptoms, and the cost of these products was more than they could afford.
This resulted in Craig's secondary mission to develop a way for patients like Regina to produce readily available botanical products at home that are “clean” and chemical free with ease regardless of their level of horticultural ability and with little to no negative impact on their living space or lifestyle.
Somehow, by the grace of God, he did, and it worked beautifully for herbs and vegetables. However, this particular remedy required a whole lot more technology to be properly grown indoors.
This is where David comes in.
Craig and David met under the most random of circumstances and went on to become the best of friends and the heart and soul of Homgarten.
David's vision of a future where growing botanical remedies at home is taken out of the basement, dressed in a suit and integrated into the modern home is the foundation stone of Homgarten.
His devotion to helping those in need has contributed to the very design of our system while is horticultural knowledge has played an enormous role in it's development and standard of efficiency.
His expertise in herbal micro botany and vision of what indoor craft gardening should look like inspired Craig to take his grow system back to the drawing board for several more years, and together they accomplished their goal by developing the first and best of its kind, Homgarten indoor smart gardening appliance.
Our team continues to lobby every day for truly compassionate laws and regulation of homeopathic remedies that serve the best interest of the patient while putting profit and politics to the side.
